One of my heroes growing up was the writer, John Stoessinger. His book, Nations in Darkness, describes bloody conflicts caused by cross-cultural misunderstandings between superpowers. “To avoid catastrophic confrontations,” he warns, “learn to understand people from other cultures and get to the realization that all human beings are brothers and sisters.”

But how can we do that?

The book I am working on, Undressing Stereotypesexplores stereotypes lost and insights gained from an in-person, cross-cultural, cross-generational friendship – one that showed me the value of Stoessinger’s advice.

“Our only real defence in a very insecure world is friendship among peoples.”
