Friends who sleep with their phones, shake their heads as if I were the old lady living in an Instagram-less shoe. I was sick for 18 years and never got around to owning a cell phone. Think Rip van Winkle. After two surgeries, I am well now and may have inadvertently dodged the time sink of the 21st century. (I will be forever thankful for the life-changing repair job from our incredible Canadian medical system.) But as I learn about social media addictions, I wonder: why get a smartphone, when landline & email work for me – and allow time for my reading and writing addictions?
One of my heroes growing up was the writer, John Stoessinger. His book, Nations in Darkness (1971), describes bloody conflicts caused by cross-cultural misunderstandings between superpowers. “To avoid catastrophic confrontations,” he warns, “learn to understand people … and get to the realization that all human beings are brothers and sisters.” But how can we do that? As a freelance writer, my attempt has been to contribute nonfiction articles with what I hope are universal themes. (I also love the ancient art of the personal essay.) Below are logos of just a few of the mainstream media organizations that have published the writing featured in this site – intended as a portfolio of my work. I may not have a smartphone, but at least I have a website and appreciate your time in visiting it!
“Our only real defence in a very insecure world is friendship among peoples.”
